Claire E. Sylvan
Executive Director
Claire E. Sylvan is the founding Executive Director of Internationals Network for Public Schools, a national leader in educational innovation providing recent immigrant English language learners (ELLs) with a high quality public education, pathways to more»
to college and full participation in democratic society. Since its incorporation in 2004, Internationals Network has substantially increased the number of affiliated International High Schools while sustaining and deepening a dynamic collaborative network based on a quarter of a century of excellence and school based practice. Currently, there are ten International High Schools in NYC, an eleventh school in Oakland, California, and a twelfth school to open in San Francisco in Fall 2009.
A nationally recognized expert and practitioner in both school reform and the education of immigrant and English language learners, Claire is passionate about providing all students but particularly immigrant students, with personalized and cutting edge educational opportunities. Claire’s efforts at Internationals Network focus on the organization’s strategy, core values, partnerships, leadership development and fundraising.
Prior to founding Internationals Network for Public Schools, Claire worked in diverse roles and settings spanning public secondary education, teacher education and community/workplace organizing. She has provided guidance on broad school reform initiatives in New York City and State, as well as nationally. She has participated on local, state and national advisory boards, commissions and task forces providing leadership on topics including the development of state standards for English language learners, the benefits and challenges of NCLB for English learners and the opening of new small schools.
Claire has developed innovative programs and practices for diverse populations of new learners of English in various New York City public schools, led the Internationals Schools Partnership (the early network of International High Schools) and piloted the groundbreaking Early College Program at International High School at LaGuardia. She has also researched and published articles documenting the cross-section of educational reform and language development programs for immigrants and their children. Claire attended McGill University and Brooklyn College as an undergraduate and received masters and doctoral degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University.
Anna Krasowski
Assistant, Finance & Operations
Anna Krasowski is a former LaGuardia International High School student. She has worked at Internationals Network for Public Schools when it first opened it doors in 2004 as a receptionist and was Internationals first full time employee. more»
Currently she is an assistant in the Finance and Operations Department. She graduated from LaGuardia Community College with a Business Administration Degree and is currently attending Queens College pursuing a bachelor degree in Accounting.
Jessica Lee
Program Manager, I-START
Jessica Lee completed her Masters Degree in Higher Education at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. Prior to her studies at Harvard, Jessica was a Teach For America Corps member, teaching 2nd grade and Kindergarten for four years in Paterson, NJ. Jessica completed her undergraduate degree in American Studies and Sociology at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ.
Sharon Lungrin
Chief Operating Officer & Chief Financial Officer

with semi-autonomous entities in the for profit and not for profit sector. Ms. Lungrin’s previous employers include the Women’s Environment and Development Organization, the International Women’s Health Coalition, Axiom Venture Partners and Whirlpool Corporation. Sharon earned her Bachelor of Arts in International Studies from Vassar College. She earned her MBA from the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California with a focus on Entrepreneurship and Finance. She is fluent and literate in Spanish.
Anna Macal
Associate, Development & Communications
Anna Macal grew up in the Houston, Texas area and graduated from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. During college, she helped students who were on academic probation by teaching “study skills” classes about goal setting, more»
time management, note-taking, and test-taking skills. After receiving her B.B.A. in Business Management in the spring of 2007, she started working for a local nonprofit organization, Center for Houston’s Future, in the Development and Community Outreach areas. At the Center for Houston’s Future she learned the mechanics of fundraising, by having a major part in an individual campaign and coordinating fundraising events.
Janine Martyr
Associate, Academic Affairs

intervisitations, RFP projects, documentation, and curriculum collection and dissemination. As former Associate, Finance and Operations, Janine supported and/or spearheaded the development, maintenance and expansion of the business, financial and operational systems necessary to support Internationals’ mission. Immediately prior to joining Internationals, Janine served as a teaching fellow during the summer international education seminar at Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) and then spent 6 weeks in China teaching English in a University of Hong Kong/Harvard-affiliated program. At HGSE, where Janine earned her Masters in Education, Janine founded and co-chaired CRIOLE, a student group that focused on education in the Caribbean. Janine received her BSc from City University, London in Actuarial Science.
Megan Mehr
Director, Academic Affairs
Prior to joining Internationals at the Director of Academic Affairs in 2010, Megan served as a teacher and school leader in several unique and inspiring school environments that are focused on closing the achievement gap and institutionalizing and sharing best practices that other schools and communities can replicate in order to better serve their own students. more»
She worked for ten years in the Internationals High Schools: as a student teacher at The International High School at LaGuardia Community College, as a teacher at The Brooklyn International High School, and as a teacher and the founding assistant principal of International High School at Lafayette..
From 2007-2010, Megan served as the founding principal of a unique Massachusetts charter high school whose mission it is to recover high school students who have become disconnected from school and engage them in a college-preparatory school environment that couples high rigor with a range of intensive supports. Megan has a B.A. in Psychology from Boston College, an M.S. in Education from the New School University, an Administration and Supervision degree from Hunter College, and an M.A. in American Studies from Columbia University.
Sara Newan
Director, Leadership Development
Sara Newman is responsible for supporting school leaders, identifying and developing new leaders, working with principal mentors, and documenting the leadership development program. She is the founding principal of The Brooklyn International High School and has worked as a principal mentor since 2004. Sara has an M.A. in the Teaching of English from Teachers College and an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Bank Street College’s Principals Institute.
Thomas Thomson
Executive Assistant & Office Manager
Thomas Thomson was born and raised in South Africa. Graduated with a BA (English Major) from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Thomas comes to us from the Citi Foundation where he worked as an Executive Assistant. Thomas’ interests are in travel, sports (mainly rugby, cricket and equestrian), and literature with emphasis on comparative literature. He is also an avid cyclist.
Suzanne Timmer

alumni relations, as well as cross-departmental collaboration with parent programs and planned giving, she has worked for diverse organizations such as Brown University, Columbia University and the Hudson Valley Land Trust. In addition, she has served a variety of education, environmental, social justice and health-focused non-profits as a private practice consultant and volunteer. Suzanne holds a masters degree in Curriculum and Teaching from Columbia University’s Teacher College with a second concentration in Education Policy. She is currently pursuing a post-masters professional certificate in Leadership & Organizational Development at New York University.
Liliana Vargas

International High School at LaGuardia Community College for six years prior to relocating to the West Coast, including serving as the Chair of its Board of the Directors during the period of its charter status. As the Director of California New School Development for Internationals, Liliana facilitated the national expansion of Internationals schools with the openings of Oakland International High School and San Francisco International High School. She received her BA in Political Science and Spanish from Amherst College and an MA in Teaching Social Studies from Teachers College, Columbia University.
Daria Witt
Resource Development and Dissemination Manager
Daria Witt is responsible for writing and overseeing the development and documentation of various materials to support Internationals' work to improve educational outcomes for English Language Learners (ELLs). more»
These materials include curriculum, toolkits, resources, professional development workshops and other resources that will help practitioners and others to learn and deepen their understanding of the Internationals Model for educating ELLs. Daria transitioned into this position after serving for 5 years as the Director of Academic Affairs for Internationals. Prior to working at Internationals, Daria was a Humanities teacher at the Brooklyn International High School for four years and a teacher for six. Before teaching, Daria worked as a Research Associate for Professor Kenji Hakuta at Stanford University and for the Stanford Center for the Study on Race and Ethnicity on a variety of projects related to the educational needs of language and racial minority students. Prior to her work at Stanford, Daria was a Project Coordinator for the New York Immigration Coalition, an advocacy organization for immigrants. She received her BA in Social Anthropology from Harvard University and an MA in Education from Stanford University. Daria is fluent in French and Spanish and conversant in Italian.
